It is so interesting how everyone are very creative even with same/similar topics.
I have slightly changed the direction for my project as well but I assume that is not a big problem.
So while starting on my project, I came up with a question:
I am trying to email the organization I am conducting a research on but the problem I have faced is 'what shall I actually ask the organization?'. The symptoms? The treatment? The cause? The statistics? etc.. All the accurate information are all over various webpages (and actually one of their answer was to send me a link of the information).
In addition, I am debating to send emails to families who are suffering. But, it is too personal, and also what shall I ask them?
What are they going through? how do they feel? the expense?
Well, this is what I am having concerns about and I have heard some people were actually going to contact organizations they are interested in so whoever they are and even who aren't, if you guys have any thoughts or solution, feel free to give me feed backs.

I think you shouldn't be afraid to ask sensitive questions and I think part of your role is to understand them in order to design for them. From my past experience of ethnographic interviews (qualitative research), we first set up protocols - all the questions that you want to ask, and then practice it ahead of time for refinement, find a friend to test out the questions to see if they are appropriate. Of course you should inform the interviewees that they have the rights not to answer the questions and they should feel free to say as much or as little as they want. It will take some warm-up questions before they open up to a stranger and for you get to the meat. Some would refuse to talk, expect that, but some would be glad that their voices are being heard. hope this helps.
well said Caryn. It is very appropriate and important for you to ask these questions of yourself. Asking personal questions is personal! But, you are a designer. What IS appropriate for a designer to ask?
The most important thing to do is form a relationship. I'd prefer if you went in person to one organization : it's going to be immensely helpful and internet is simply one time part of a the story you're trying to tell!
See what you can do. Good luck. REFINEMENT is indeed the goal. Take good notes on your process, as you are already doing.
One last comment: I'll bring the book on Feminist Ethnography to class - you can flip through it if interested. Protocol and accountability is important. I'll tell you the story of the Stanford research team that made a big mistake ...
